The Taller Antiguas Maravillas Oaxaqueñas (Workshop of Ancient Oaxacan Wonders) is comprised of five members of the same family: four women and one man. It was founded in 1976 by master craftsman Arturo Salgado Vásquez, who learned this art from his older brother, thus beginning a family project. Later, his wife, Martha Tellez Gopar, also acquired this skill, followed by their three daughters, Donaji, Rubi, and Yesenia. Currently, the third generation—their grandchildren Frida, Yael, Jesús, Mateo, and Samuel—have begun their training in this tradition.
The workshop's main objective is to revive the ancient technique of filigree (cartonado), unique to the state of Oaxaca, which is made entirely by hand. This technique is at risk of disappearing because younger generations have lost interest in learning it. Their workshop is based on the rescue and promotion of this art, recognized as a craft both nationally and internationally:
-To conserve and preserve the ancestral technique of Oaxacan filigree (cartoneado).
-To promote the use and appreciation of Oaxacan handicrafts.
-To transmit the art of goldsmithing to new generations.
-To contribute to the development and cultural enhancement of the community.
-To promote the beauty of Oaxacan goldsmithing nationally and internationally.
