Theresa Bear Fox (Mohawk Six Nations)
Theresa Bear Fox, whose Mohawk name is Kenkiohkoktha—meaning "I'm at the back of a crowd of people"—was named in honor of her grandmother. She belongs to the Wolf Clan and has lived her entire life in Akwesasne, a community that has shaped her deeply rooted identity.
A proud mother of five—one daughter and four sons—and a grandmother to fourteen, Theresa grew up in a large family of fourteen children: eight boys and six girls. From an early age, music was an important part of her life. Her mother played the harmonica and piano, while two of her brothers and a sister played guitar. Surrounded by music, Theresa developed a deep love for singing and songwriting.
She began writing songs for Kontiwennenhawi (Carriers of the Words), a traditional women's singing group dedicated to preserving and uplifting the Mohawk language and culture. With the support of friends and family, she was able to incorporate the Mohawk language into her songs—something she believes is vital for the survival of her people’s identity. Her commitment to the language continues to this day.
Around the year 2000, Theresa also began writing songs in English. She believes that music carries powerful messages and has the ability to heal, calm the spirit, and bring people together. Her songs reflect her love for her culture, her language, and her community—and they continue to inspire and uplift all who hear them.
